professional and leadership coaching

Coaching Style

Before pursuing my second career as a sociologist, I began my career journey as an ice hockey coach, with a decade of clinical and team coaching experience across both my native Canada and Australia.

Like the professional world, ice hockey is a fast game. If your strategy is to follow the puck, you will quickly learn it moves faster than you can. In both cases, you can have a highly skilled team with passionate leaders; but without technique and vision, they will tend to play the game reactively rather than proactively.

Without a solid technical foundation (management and leadership skills, alongside organisational expertise), it can be difficult to develop your team into a highly-functioning unit. I'll introduce you to the evidence-base on how to develop and lead a team who can both collaborate efficiently, and perform independently without oversight when needed.

Without strategy, you and your team will find yourselves in a reactive space; always chasing shifting organisational priorities, struggling to collaborate effectively, grappling with a lack of role clarity, and quickly burning out. We'll work together to explore what the research tells us about developing a solid strategic approach to leadership, so you can move out of a reactive space, and lead with confidence and vision.

In hockey, we like to say you can either chase the puck (and end up playing the other team's game); or you can go where the puck is going to go, which means developing the vision necessary to play your own game. Through engaging the evidence-base on effective leadership and strategic planning, I'll coach you on how to develop your game, play with vision, and achieve success.

Management and Leadership Foundations: From Technique to Strategy

Target Audience

Aimed at those who are either new to middle-management, or moving into  middle-management role with a wider scope of duties.

Schedule: Weekly, Fortnightly, or Monthly

Curriculum

Across five pre-planned sessions, we will navigate themes including:

  • Discerning when to use management or leadership skillsets
  • Strategic communication and psychological safety for teams
  • Influencing senior leaders and managing up
  • Team planning, role clarity, and leading with vision
  • Understanding and navigating your organisational culture.

Why it Will Help

One of the most common friction-points in organisational culture surrounds transitioning promising professionals into skilled leaders. Many who are new to leadership progressed into their role after demonstrating high performance across more junior duties: project management, maintaining good peer relationships at work, and delivering in their specialised area. For many, this can lead to difficulty letting go: in an area where you're used to overseeing everything from planning through to delivery, only offering broad guidance and oversight can feel like losing control. Often, this leads to micromanagement, a decline in role clarity, morale, and productivity across the team, and delays in delivering on the broader organisational priorities associated with middle-management duties. This coaching curriculum supports new and emerging leaders to avoid the pitfalls common in the early stages of the leadership journey, and brings the skills and knowledge necessary to lead a thriving team.

Vision and Strategy in Organisational Culture for Senior Leaders

Target Audience

This coaching curriculum can be delivered across one of two streams:

(1) Aimed at those currently adapting to a more senior or strategy-based leadership role, or experienced middle-managers thinking about taking the leap

(2) Aimed at established senior leaders looking to expand their skillsets and keep up-to-date with best practices for healthy organisational culture

Please note that if group delivery is selected, only one mode can be chosen.

Schedule: Weekly, Fortnightly, or Monthly

Curriculum

Across five pre-planned sessions, we will navigate themes including:

  • Fostering psychologically safe practices within organisational culture
  • Consulting effectively with organisational stakeholders
  • Developing and supporting emerging leaders
  • Establishing your strategic and organisational vision
  • Navigating change processes and avoiding common pitfalls

Why it Will Help

In roles requiring strategising across an organisation or major operational area, senior leaders are often required to make decisions that impact a wide range of stakeholders. In most cases, this means leading across a variety areas, many of which are likely to fall outside your own expertise and professional experience. To do so effectively, it is essential to recognise the value of institutional and subject matter expertise; consult effectively with diverse stakeholders; and develop other leaders who can provide trusted guidance across your blind-spots. These skills are necessary not only for maintaining quality collegial relationships, but also for navigating change processes, ensuring boundaried role clarity for yourself and others, and establishing a strategic vision that will allow both you and your organisation to thrive. In an era where psychological safety at work is rapidly emerging as an OH&S concern--with role clarity, change management, organisational culture, and workload all impacting employee wellbeing--effective senior leadership skillets are becoming more important than ever to an organisation's success. This coaching curriculum supports senior and emerging strategic leaders to strengthen their approach to stakeholder engagement, uplift organisational culture in key areas, and both lead and model the implementation of psychologically safe workplace practices.

Leadership for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Target Audience

Established and emerging leaders in diverse organisations, with responsibility for delivering and/or strategising organisational culture initiatives related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Schedule: Weekly, Fortnightly, or Monthly

Curriculum

Across five pre-planned sessions, we will navigate themes including:

  • Understanding systemic barriers to equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Psychological safety for inclusion, wellbeing, and belonging
  • Applying an intersectional lens to leadership and decision-making
  • Effectively addressing complex inequities within your team, including those relating to caring responsibilities, cultural and linguistic diversity, gender diversity, neurodiversity, and disability
  • Integrating your organisation's approach to EDI into practice

Why it Will Help

Research tells us there is an enormous gap between official organisational narratives on EDI, and the implementation of these aims in practice. Many leaders are committed to creating inclusive workplaces, but require support to translate positive intentions into organisational impact. In this coaching package, we take a two-pronged approach: First exploring general and evidence-based principles for supporting EDI at work; and then learning how to identify the strengths and limitations of your organisation's own systems, processes, policies.

Neurodiversity at Work or School

Target Audience

This Coaching Curriculum can be delivered in one of two streams:

1) Neurodiversity for Employers

2) Neurodiversity for Educators

For audiences who require both streams, e.g. schools or universities with neurodivergent staff and students, an additional two sessions can be added onto your single-stream price, to allow for full delivery at a discounted rate.

Schedule: Weekly, Fortnightly, or Monthly

Curriculum

Across five pre-planned sessions, we will navigate the following themes:

  • Introduction to Neurodiversity and cultural sensitivity
  • Navigating Disclosures and providing reasonable adjustments
  • Supporting Executive Functioning at work or school
  • The Intersectionality of Neurodiversity
  • Taking a strengths-based approach

Why it Will Help

Around 1 in 5 people (20% of the population) are Neurodivergent, including those who are Autistic, ADHD, Dyslexic, or navigating a variety of mental health conditions. Many employers and educational institutions are finding themselves receiving more disclosures than ever before, and grappling with how to respond and support their staff and/or students effectively. Led by an expert who has published scholarly research on neurodiversity, and led Australia's first university-based neuroinclusion project, you will learn how to translate the research evidence-base in this area into practical outcomes in your workplace or learning environment.
