Facilitation & mediation

Two colleagues discussing work across a desk with a laptop.

The Mission

My role is to support professional relationships through:

  1. Preemptive facilitations to prevent conflict escalation
  2. Mediating in cases where conflict is acute and ongoing
  3. Acting as an unbiased, external third-party

Workplace relationship difficulties are rarely caused by one conversation or one individual alone. They often develop through accumulated misunderstandings, avoidance due to uncertainty about how to navigate conflict professionally, and concerns about the impact of seeking solutions. My role is to create a structured process through which conflict can be understood, discussed and addressed constructively. As an unbiased and external third-party, I create a psychologically safe space for each party to share their concerns candidly, begin to reestablish trust and communication where it has broken down, and receive ongoing support in pursuing the organisation's desired outcomes.

The Approach

I do not reduce workplace conflict to personality differences or assume that communication alone will resolve things. I examine how complex factors like identity, role ambiguity, and professional transitions (eg organisational or role changes) shape relationships.

My facilitation and mediation packages typically involve:

  • Preparatory discussions with P&C/HR stakeholders
  • Establishing an understanding of your internal policies
  • Individual conversations to identify each participant’s concerns and goals
  • Facilitated joint conversations to begin moving forward
  • Development of a shared 'Ways of Working' Plan; and
  • Follow-up coaching support to uplift professional capabilities on both sides.

The structure is adapted according to the complexity of the situation, the number of people involved, and the organisation’s desired outcomes. I aim to move beyond simply mediating a discussion or re-establishing a working relationship. I strive to deliver benefits that will extend well beyond the initial context, providing professional uplift and growth that will carry forward.

The Expertise

As a sociologist, it's my job to develop deep understandings of people's stories, alongside the complex social factors which can shape their wellbeing--both within and outside of work.  I am experienced in asking careful questions, listening for explicit concerns while identifying underlying patterns that emerge, and analysing conflicting accounts without becoming biased.

My experience conducting interviews and focus groups allows me to move beyond identifying and documenting a problem. I am also equipped to strategise potential solutions, anticipate barriers to reaching desired outcomes, and consider the broader organisational, privacy, and policy impacts of both the facilitated relationship itself, and any possible solutions.

I bring extensive experience facilitating discussions involving communication, inclusion, workplace expectations, professional relationships and sensitive organisational issues. My work across higher education, consulting, government, legal and professional environments has exposed me to a wide range of people, workplace cultures, and institutional pressures.

Past Experiences Include:

  • Assisting mid to large-scale organisations with facilitations and mediations
  • De-escalating complaints in large organisations to avoid external avenues
  • Navigating complex internal policies and legislation to ensure alignment
  • Documenting reasonable adjustments and work agreements for disability
  • Conducting surveys, interviews, and focus groups to collect wellbeing and inclusion data and assessing for risk factors
  • Strategic advising where culture uplift is required
